Pilates Magic Ring

Joseph PIlates and the Power Ring

Following the 1910s when Joseph Pilates created his exercise system, he invented several pieces of apparatus and accessories, including the Magic Circle, or Pilates Ring. Historical information from Balanced Body Pilates notes how early Pilates equipment was constructed of hospital beds and springs. Legend has it that his first rings were made from whiskey barrel bands. Today, they are smooth metal circles with cushions at the sides, which are easy to use at home for arm exercises.

Pilates Magic Circle being used between the legs

From July 2010, the  Pilates Magic Circle is now being used in some of the mat classes to add a variety to the pilates workout.  The Magic Circle is a sprung circle steel measuring 13 to 14 inches in diameter and weight about 1 kg.  It is used as a resistance-training tool to supplement your pilates workout.. By squeezing the circle between your legs or hands you work your thigh, chest or upper arm muscles to develop strength and muscle tone.

Over the next few weeks you will see how the ring can be used in a variety of ways to enhance your pilates workout and you will notice that your body shape will change over a period of time.

I will be adding some pictures to this page so that you can see how it can be used.

The Magic Circles have been purchased from www.yoga-mad.com a great supplier of yoga and pilates equipment.  This is where all my equipment comes from.

Well, I hope you al enjoyed using the Pilates Ring last night. Lots of positive comments were shared with me after the 7pm and 8pm class – can feel it in the shoulders and legs. I hope I gave you lots of ideas on how it can be used. During August will be putting up some pictures on use of the ring of the site, so check it out. So on a Monday night the classes will be rotated, mat, ball and ring. Check out the class timetable which is about to be updated now.

    Monday 5 July

Loved this evening’s class, my legs feel that they have been stretched within an inch of themselves. Please God, just give me the extra inch by the end of the year.

Def., think the magic circle will have great results. Thanks for a challenging class. Liz, you always make each class interesting, classes never get boring.

I thought the Ring added an extra dimension to the exercises but didn’t ache like I thought I would afterwards. Am keen to carry on using it and always look forward to pilates ! Thanks Liz.

Pilates has really helped to loosen my back. The Pilates Ring really
worked my arms and legs and made me feel like i was working them 10
times harder then without it – it would be great to keep using it!

My Dr recommened pilates to help my recovery during my breast cancer treatment and I can honestly say it is really helping. For the first few weeks I was not convinced, then I suddenly realised that my joints were much less painful, and with the help of the ring, I am finding some of the exercises much easier as I had become really unfit. So I really think I am converted to Love Pilates. Thanks for all your support Liz.
